Advanced Driver Assistance Systems

The National Safety Council and the National Transportation Safety Board hosted a roundtable discussion July 24 on advanced driver assistance systems and how commercial fleets (heavy trucks) can increase adoption of this life-saving technology. Roundtable participants included experts in ADAS from industry, government, advocacy groups, media and academia.

ADAS Can Save Lives 

Motor vehicle crashes continue to be a leading cause of preventable death in the U.S. In 2016, about 40,000 Americans died from traffic crashes, a 6% jump from the previous year. More than 4,300 large trucks and buses were involved in fatal crashes in 2015, an 8% increase from 2014, according to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.

ADAS, also known as collision avoidance technologies, can play a significant role in preventing crashes and saving lives. While adoption of these lifesaving technologies has grown significantly in the passenger vehicle market, adoption of ADAS technologies in commercial fleets (heavy-duty trucks) and among employer and rental fleets has been slow.
