Now, the group is ready to put the roadmap into action and has identified three priorities to accomplish this, including connecting the prioritizing safety efforts with transportation equity. This session will discuss the importance of an equity lens in safe systems and explore ways to make sure equity is at the foundation of our safety culture.

Transportation Roundtable: Roadway Safety During COVID-19 and Beyond
Tuesday, July 21
During this roundtable, the National Safety Council – in partnership with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Governors Highway Safety Association and AAA – presented motor vehicle fatality estimates that correspond with the COVID-19 pandemic. Panelists from each organization discussed necessary transportation changes as the U.S. grapples with COVID-19. This includes the role employers, federal and state leaders, and public health and safety professionals all play in saving lives on the road. With motor vehicle crashes as the leading cause of workplace death, employers should be especially concerned. NSC is also offering new roadway resources, including a SAFER playbook on transportation considerations for returning to work.

A representative from 2018 Safe Systems Innovation Grant recipient Lorain County Public Health gave an update on the implementation of its combined Active Transportation Plan and Safe Routes to School Plan for the City of Lorain in Northeast Ohio. The community collaborative, Lorain Connected, brings multiple stakeholders together, sharing the responsibility to implement priorities identified in the Active Transportation Plan. Priorities include temporary demonstrations, education and encouragement campaigns, bike shares and bicycle co-ops.

2018 Safe Systems Innovation Grant recipient, Bicycle Colorado, gave an overview of the implementation of the statewide Bicycle-friendly Driver program, lessons learned and next steps for the program. Bicycle-friendly Driver is designed to teach motorists and bicyclists how to use our streets safely together. The 1.5-hour, interactive courses cover laws for each road user, how to navigate on-street bicycle infrastructure and how to avoid common crashes between motorists and bicyclists.

2018 Safe Systems Innovation Grant recipient Dr. Tony McDonald of the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at Texas A&M University discussed findings from a study of drowsy driving education and technology interventions for night shift nurses. The multi-phase project consisted of interviews and a large naturalistic driving study. Findings highlight the urgent need for drowsy driving interventions among nurses and provide a potential pathway to effective solutions.

The Coalition welcomed representatives from the National League of Cities and the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, among others. Discussions centered around Road to Zero 2019 highlights, as well as real-world examples of what's working in municipalities throughout the country.

Safe Systems approaches deploy comprehensive and sustained investment to protect vulnerable road users. With grant funds from the Road to Zero Coalition, America Walks partnered with the UNC Highway Safety Research Center in 2018 to provide training, technical assistance and mini grants to 12 U.S. communities to facilitate their shift toward Safe Systems approaches to solving the rise in pedestrian fatalities and injuries. This webinar highlights successes and lessons learned from this effort.

The Road to Zero Coalition met Dec. 4 in Washington, D.C.
Immediately following the Coalition meeting, NSC and leaders in the insurance industry hosted a panel discussion on the challenges of distracted driving. Participating insurance companies included AON, Liberty Mutual, Zurich, USAA and Nationwide, along with the Property and Casualty Insurers Association (PCI), and Network of Employers for Traffic Safety (NETS). The group discussed mid- and long-term countermeasures and their trade-offs.

The June 28 Road to Zero Coalition meeting kicked off with a welcome by NTSB Chairman Robert Sumwalt, who shared the latest information on the Uber fatality in Arizona, Tesla crashes, recent bus crashes and the recommendations for seat belts in buses.

The Road to Zero Coalition Report was released at the Lifesavers Conference in San Antonio, the largest gathering of highway safety professionals in the U.S. The event brings together public health and safety professionals, researchers, advocates, practitioners and students committed to sharing best practices, research and policy initiatives proven to work. Deborah A.P. Hersman, chair of Road to Zero and president and CEO of the National Safety Council, was keynote speaker during the opening plenary. Get her presentation.

Road to Zero Coalition meeting was held March 20 at the National Transportation Safety Board Conference Center in Washington, DC. The meeting, titled Commercial Vehicles, from Safe Systems to Technology Innovations, featured National Transportation Safety Board member T. Bella Dinh-Zarr, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Deputy Administrator Heidi King and Raymond P. Martinez of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.
