Itasca, IL – The National Safety Council supports and recommends following interim CPR guidelines recently published by the American Heart Association in an effort to reduce transmission of the COVID-19 virus during resuscitative efforts.
Specifically, it is recommended bystanders and lay rescuers perform “hands-only” CPR (chest compressions without breaths) and the use of an automated external defibrillator for adult victims with suspected or confirmed cases of COVID-19. Additionally, rescuers should wear a mask or cloth covering their face and nose while performing compressions and also consider placing a mask or covering over the victim’s mouth and nose when possible.
